About the Exhibit

“We are giving this glorious landscape a voice – the ice and its guardian mountains stand mute; they cannot speak for themselves.”

-Jim Elzinga

Patagonia Elements is proud to be a presenting partner of MELTDOWN - A Drop in Time. The exhibit will immerse viewers deep into Canadian glacial landscapes through a series of fine-art environmental photographs taken by the founder of Guardians of the Ice Jim Elzinga and filmmaker Roger Vernon. Merging the emotional power of artistic expression and the rational strength of science, it offers a unique perception and understanding of these landscapes. The opening of the exhibit at the Whyte Museum marks the beginning of Canada's participation in the 2025 United Nations International Year of Glacier Preservation.

Also on view is the film Losing Blue, a compelling documentary by Leanne Allison that explores the loss of the otherworldly blue hues of ancient glacial lakes, now fading due to climate change.

Guardians of the Ice

Founder of Guardians of the Ice, Jim Elzinga, is a legendary alpinist, photographer and planetary change agent with over 50 years of experience. He has led multiple expeditions throughout North America, the Himalayas and the Andes. Most notably, he led the most successful Canadian expedition to Everest (Everest Light) for which he received a rare Award of Recognition from the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation.

Jim started Guardians of the Ice to bring attention to the rapidly shrinking Columbia Icefield through the emotional power of art and the rational, quantitative truths of science. The Guard consists of photographers, filmmakers, artists, alpinists and scientists with a common goal of engaging the public and communicating the urgency of what is being uncovered at the icefield as an indicator of the world climate crisis.

A study led by Garry Clarke predicted that the glaciers would shrink by 80% by 2100 (or sooner). Climate change has caused the ice to melt faster and for longer periods of time, as glaciers recede we risk losing consistency in our water supply among other threats.
