Photos to Take in Fall

From jumping on a silly trend to taking a family for your mantle, there are endless ways to take a fall photo! We have compiled a list of some of our favourite trends and techniques.

Pumpkin Head: If you use social media, you are probably familiar with the pumpkin head photo trend. Hollow out a pumpkin, carve it and place it over or hold it in front of your head.

Pumpkin Patch: Another way to incorporate pumpkins as a prop without the spooky factor is by taking your photos in a pumpkin patch or by using a few pumpkins as props.

Ghost Photoshoot: Another trend that rightfully makes a comeback every year is the ghost photoshoot! Take a white sheet, cut eye holes and take some fall-themed photos. This is also a great technique for getting fun photos of your pets!

Picnic: Elevate your photoshoot experience by combining it with enjoying a picnic! Enjoy the autumn scenery with your friends and family while also snapping some great candid photos. We think the Hooke Canadian Outdoor Blanket is the perfect picnic blanket for helping set the scene!

What to Wear for Fall Photos

Matching Sweaters: Tie the photo together with matching sweaters! We love the Patagonia Recycled Wool-Blend Cable-Knit Crewneck Sweater for both men and women. To get the entire family matching, we recommend the Patagonia Down Sweater for men, women and kids

Flannels: Nothing says fall quite like a flannel, set the scene with the Patagonia Fjord Flannel or go for a staple red flannel with the Filson Alaskan Guide Shirt

For couples or friends looking to match, we love the Hooke Light Work Overalls. If you're looking for something to keep you warm and add a rustic flair to your photos, we recommend the Filson Mackinaw Bibs!

Colourful Toques: A Canadian staple in the fall and winter months, add a splash of colour to your photoshoot with an assortment of colourful toques! Our favourites are the Hooke Original Beanie, the Filson Ballard Watch Cap and for babies, we think the Patagonia Baby Animal Friend Beanie is perfect for for fall photoshoots.

Where to Take Your Fall Photos

Fall adds vibrancy to any location from downtown in a big city to rural locations! Imagine how you want your fall photoshoot to turn out and choose the location accordingly. Some great locations to consider are local parks, your favourite hiking spots, pumpkin patches (such as pick-your-own pumpkin fields) or even your backyard.

Time of Day: The best time of day to get outdoor photos is commonly referred to as the golden hour. This time is shortly after sunrise or shortly after sunset when the daylight is redder and softer than normal.

Our favourite spots by location:

Calgary

  • Scotsman’s Hill
  • Fishcreek Park
  • Glenmore Resveoire

Victoria

  • The Butchart Gardens
  • Gowland Tod Provincial Park
  • Maple Mountain

Banff

  • Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass
  • Downtown Banff/Banff Ave
