Life is busy and you work hard, it's easy to forget the importance of taking time to relax and recharge. The idea of "taking it easy" sounds like a luxury many of us can't afford, however allowing yourself to take things slow is crucial for your mental and physical wellbeing. Put your boots up and take a well deserved break with our guide to taking it easy!

Slow Down and Turn Your Brain Off

While it's great to strive for high productivity, it's important to allow yourself to relax once in a while. These are our favourite ways to turn our brains off and chill!

Watch a show: Curl up on the couch with a warm blanket such as our Filson Mackinaw Blanket and turn on your favourite show or movie.

Read a book: Immerse yourself in another world and crack open a good book, we love A Mountaineer's Life by Allen Steck and Some Stories by Yvon Chouinard.

Take a nap: Most of us reserve sleep for after a long day of work and other responsibilities. There really is no better way to turn your brain off than sleep, so get some much-needed rest and catch some extra Z's! For an extra comfortable nap, get cozy in the Filson Fire Mountain Blanket.

Go for a walk: Light exercise, fresh air and a great view are the perfect ingredients for slowing down! Take a light walk in your favourite park or around your neighbourhood. To combat the fall temperatures, we recommend the Hooke Canadian Insulated Shirt.

Start a New Hobby or Rekindle an Old One

Hobbies are crucial for disconnecting from work and giving people an outlet for stress relief and creativity. Start a new hobby, make time for a current one or pick up an old one!

Hiking: Hiking is a great option for its versatility in pace and intensity as well as giving you the opportunity to enjoy stunning scenery. From long, intense hikes to short nature walks, hiking is a great way to relax and recharge! Our hiking essentials include the Patagonia Quandary Pants, the Terravia Pack and the Hooke Field Shirt. Check out our guide to fall hiking for tips and tricks on hiking in the dropping temperatures.

Fishing: Fishing offers an escape from the day-to-day, combining the calming sounds of nature with the rhythmic motion of casting and reeling. It’s a great way to unwind, whether you’re enjoying solitude or sharing the experience with friends! Some of our favourite fishing gear includes the Hooke Fly Box and the Filson Fishing Chest Pack.

Running: Running is the perfect way to blow off steam, and is beneficial to both your mental and physical health. The hobby can range from being a casual way to get exercise to intense training for races! We think the Patagonia Peak Mission Tights and the Houdini Jacket are great for both new and seasoned runners.

Fibre Arts: Embroidery, crochet, sewing, knitting and more! Fibre arts are a great way to unleash your creative side, wind down and relax. The Filson Embroidered Western Shirt is a great addition to any fibre artist's wardrobe!

Baking: Baking is a relaxing hobby that engages the senses and encourages mindfulness, allowing you to focus on the process. On top of being therapeutic, it's delicious!

Disconnect From the Chaos

It can be hard to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of our day-to-day lives. The final and most important step in this guide is to take a step back and take a breather from the chaos.

Have a picnic: Pack a simple lunch, grab a blanket such as the Hooke Canadian Outdoor Blanket, and head to your favourite park. Enjoy the fresh air, the fall leaves and a delicious meal without the rush!

Go Camping: Take some time away from the city to connect with nature by planning a camping trip! Stargaze, hike, birdwatch or just relax by the fire with a hot drink and smores. We love Heritage Roasters Flash Fuel Coffee (available in-store).

Hang out with a friend: Arguably the best way to disconnect from the chaos is to connect with the people we care about. Call up or plan an outing with a friend or family member!
