Regardless of where our outdoor adventures and hobbies take us, all of us are passionate about protecting the wild places we explore. Elements Outfitters/Patagonia Calgary, Banff and Victoria are proud members of 1% For The Planet, a global community of businesses that commit to donating 1% of all sales to organizations dedicated to protecting our home planet. For 2024, we have donated to multiple environmental organizations that are making strides in conservation and sustainability.
Guardians of the Ice
The Columbia Icefield located on the Continental Divide in the Canadian Rockies is rapidly shrinking. David Hik, a Professor of Terrestrial Ecology, states an estimated 80% of the mountain glaciers in Alberta and British Columbia will disappear over the next 50 years. Guardians of the Ice is a non-profit organization, dedicated to engaging the public and building support for a low-carbon future. Linking the emotional power of art through photography, film and writing with the cognitive clarity of science, they communicate the urgency of what is being uncovered at the ice fields.
Ancient Forest Alliance
Around 74% of the original, productive old-growth forests on BC’s southern coast have been logged, destroying a non-renewable ecosystem many animals, plants and people rely on. Ancient Forest Alliance has and continues to make strides in both protecting these ancient forests and ensuring a sustainable, value-added, second-growth forestry industry in BC. Founded by Ken Wu and TJ Watt in 2010, Ancient Forest Alliance has quickly grown into British Columbia’s primary organization working toward province-wide legislation to end the logging of endangered old-growth forests.
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society
The impacts of biodiversity loss and climate change have been devastating both within Canada and globally. CPAWS is Canada's only charity dedicated to the protection of public land, freshwater and the ocean with a strong presence both regionally and nationally across the country. They focus on nature conservation, responding to the crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change in a way that respects the sovereignty and leadership of Indigenous nations.
Freshwater Conservation Canada
Freshwater Conservation Canada (formerly Trout Unlimited) is dedicated to conserving, protecting and restoring Canada's freshwater ecosystems and cold water resources. The organization started as 7 fly fishers who were concerned about habitat loss in Canadian streams and has since grown into a boots-on-the-ground force, making strides in conserving water quality and quantity, protecting aquatic habitats and fostering community.
Backcountry Hunters and Anglers
The freedom to hunt and fish depends on wild places! Through education, advocacy, and conservation work, Back Country Hunters and Anglers protects hunting and fishing in a natural setting within North America. With the increased pressure of natural resource extraction and the ongoing threats to backcountry land and wildlife, BHA has made and continues to make strides in conserving public lands for generations to come.
Ducks Unlimited
Wetlands across Canada and North America continue to be lost at an alarming rate, causing devastation to the waterfowl and wildlife that rely on these areas. Since 1936, Ducks Unlimited has been dedicated to the conservation, protection and restoration of wetlands across Canada and has positively influenced more than 201.8 million acres of habitat.
